The noon day sun was high in the sky, warming the back of the female who was walking towards the rushing waters. She knew that she shouldn't have left her pack, but she felt herself being shoved towards the falls. The sound of the water echoed in her one hearing ear, driving her forward. Her pace picked up to a trot. Worry filled her, what if her Master came and found her here? A shiver pasted down her spine, making her run towards the water.
Green foliage surrounded Echo as she reached the waters edge. Laying on her stomach she dipped her head towards the cool, crisp water and took a long drink. With the liquid sitting in her belly she felt the worry melt away. She would be okay, she would be okay. Echo wiggled backward and turned onto her back, letting the sun warm her belly. Her paws flopped in the air, a smile forming on her lips. It was a good day to be alive.
The female yawned, the stretching of her muscled pulling at her scar. Shaking her head she let it relax, her smile disappearing. She remembered the day when she got that scar, her alpha and his son beating her near death. This was after they killed her pups before her very eyes. A violent shutter shook her, almost making her fall back into the river. That day was stuck in her memory like glue, and she was sure that it would never leave her. Fear filled her gut, worried about ever being pregnant again. She was scared that if she had another litter, they too would be taken away from her. A low whine whispered out between her lips as she turned back on her belly, curling into a ball. Maybe it wasn't such a great day to be alive... although there had been worse.

Such a relaxing sound, the roaring of the water was. It lulled the large wolf into a dream like state in his mind, even though his body was completely awake and alert. Striking eyes closing, the male let his mind wander, drifting off into some daydream that absorbed him even in these waking hours. Vivid images of a small, almost black pup danced across his closed lids. The youngster was bounding along after something, happy and at ease to just chase the green creature through the peaceful woods. It wasn’t until he caught a glimpse of the pup’s left ear, darker in color than the rest of his body, that he fully realized it was himself taking over his imagination. The younger version of him was pursuing a frog, seeming content to simply follow it along. There didn’t seem to be any ill intent in his body language… until younger him opened those little jaws, appearing as if he were about to make a snack out of the smaller animal. A sudden jolt of panic struck through him, though he wasn’t even sure why. It was just a frog, after all. But then, off behind him, a much larger version of himself appeared, razor sharp teeth suddenly bearing down on the youngster. Watch out! he wanted to scream a warning at the pup.
Jolting to his feet in an instant, Nirco spun around a few times in search of the beast that had appeared to be himself, eyes wide in alarm. But there was nothing. No razor like teeth, no pup and not even a frog. With a deep sigh, his body relaxed. Just a dream he told himself. But how could it have been? He was wide awake and had been during the whole ordeal. The deafening sound of the cascading water had never left him. Then was it a hallucination, perhaps? He shook his head at the mere prospect of it. He refused to believe the notion that he was going crazy.
The scent of another was all of a sudden filling his nostrils, and he wasted no time to rush away from the pool of water that had once been only feet from him. He had no desire to meet up with some lunatic stranger. You’re the one imagining things, so who’s the real lunatic? was the thought that irritably pricked at his mind. He simply rolled his eyes.
He’d been walking away through the brush for only a minute or so when something abruptly stopped him. It’s as if he’d hit a brick wall and couldn’t go on. That scent from before… something about it was familiar to him. He’d smelled it before on someone whom he’d not seen in a long, long while. Could it be…? No he spat to himself in his head as he took a few more forceful steps in the direction he had been headed. She’s dead, you retard, don’t get your hopes up. You’re just imagining things again the pessimistic side of him said. But the optimistic side caused him to stop once more. It has to be!
He turned his head to look over his shoulder, back towards the falls that were no longer in sight. There was a war raging on inside his head. Nirco had learned long ago that getting such hopes up was usually futile. It just caused one to get hurt. But today, he couldn’t fight against the side that told him to go back. There was no real way explain it. He just had to.
At a trot, it didn’t take him long to arrive back where he’d started. Back where his imaginings had gotten the better of him earlier. At first, there wasn’t another soul in sight. But then, as he was about to deflate a little in defeat, he spotted something. There, over by the waters edge, close to where he’d been before he’d left, was a small reddish colored wolf. She was curled into a ball, as if hiding from the frightening place this world could be. She looked smaller than he remembered, though that could have been because she was curled up or because he’d grown up a little more since the last time he’d seen her.
It cant be her! It cant be! He killed her, remember? You’re just seeing things! said the usual voice that plagued his mind. For once he ignored it, though. All he could do was stand there, thirty or so feet away, staring with absolutely no real expression given away on his face. YOU’RE JUST SEEING THINGS.

Another whimper pasted through Echo's lips as she curled tighter into a ball, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her babies... she lost her babies. After a few heartbeats her tears stopped, and anger replaced it. Her tail wagged back and forth slowly, irritation making her ears twitch. Is was his fault! Her claws dug into the earth, scratching grooves into it. He killed them, her so called leader. His son had proclaimed his love to her, then laughed in her face as they beat her and murdered her three pups before her eyes. He would get, one day. Echo growled, uncurling and leaping to her feet. Turning to the stream, she growled again and slapped her paw across the surface. "D-d-damn him! I will g-g-get-t-t him b-b-bac-c-ck for all of t-t-t-this. F-f-f-or my p-p-pup-ps, f-f-for m-m-mak-k-king me half d-d-deaf, and f-f-for t-t-t-this damn sc-sc-scar!" she stuttered. She turned around then, about to walkk away when her eyes locking on a black form who was staring at her.
Echo froze, her whole body feeling as if it had been dumped in ice on it. Could it be? She hadn't seen this wolf since she was left half dead outside of their pack. She blinked her eyes several times, focusing on the black one in front of her. She would recognize a wolf of her pack anywhere, and with his eyes and the one darker ear, she would pick him up anywhere. "N-n-nir-ir-o?" she asked, taking a single step towards him. It couldn't be, but here he was. Something came over her then, and she raced over to him. "N-n-niro!" she barked, her stuttering lessened as she pressed her face into his shoulder. "H-h-how did y-y-yo-you g-g-get h-he-here?" Echo suddenly stepped back, becoming self conscious of her stutter. She then remembered her scar, and turned the left side of her face towards her shoulder. She took a few more steps backwards, ashamed for him to see her like this.
Before Echo was beaten, she could hear fine, didn't stutter, and didn't have a scar running from her left ear and circled to the middle of her muzzle. She whined softly, her ears pinning slightly in sadness. She was ashamed to be seen this way. To be seen so... defeated. Her pale green eyes flicked towards Nirco, her rusty red tail flicking a few times as an apology. She didn't want to talk anymore, she didn't want him to hear her. She was very happy that he had not been killed too, there Alpha had been a nasty one, killing wolves left right and center. He was not the kind of wolf that one wanted to meet.
She kept her eyes glued to the brute, mixed feelings swarming in her eyes. She was happy that he was alive, she really was. She was confused though, unsure of what he was going to think of her. He probably thought that she was dead, and here was was standing in front of him. There had to be a lot running though his head...

He continued to stare as she had, what seemed like, a small fit of some sort. Curiosity abound, Nirco wondered what it could possibly be about. Perhaps her words should of made it obvious, but he was taken aback by the severe stuttering to the point that he hadn’t actually caught what she had said. The Echo that he remembered hadn’t stuttered like that, and he was suddenly struck with worry. What could cause such a normal wolf to suddenly possess such a horrible habit? The last time they had spoke, before she and her pups had gone missing, she had been fine.
As he began to wonder this, he also began to wonder where her pups even were. A quick glance around confirmed that they most certainly were not in the immediate vicinity. Perhaps they were with a friend of Echo’s? They must have been old enough by now to not need their mother around constantly. And, most importantly, they must have been alive if Echo was. Right?
Just as he began to wonder to much on the subject, the other was racing over to him and pressing herself against his large shoulder. If Nirco hadn’t known her as he had, he probably would of snarled and shoved her away. It had happened on several occasions with needy wolves he hardly knew. But that wasn’t the case here. He’d known this wolf since the day he was born. She’d been about a year old already when he’d come along. She had been there the day that he had finally opened his eyes as a pup. She’d even watched him grow up. And so he welcomed her touch more than he would most. Perhaps he should of said something to her stuttered questions right away, but it took him a moment to get over the shock that was still ever present.
Oh my god, she’s really alive! he thought after another long moment of staring at her. She’d backed away by now, which seemed to help bring him out of his stupor.
Nirco had never been the most talkative being there had ever been. His silence had gotten worse the day his mother had disappeared, murdered by his old pack leader. Since that day, there had been little desire to hold so much as a conversation with most, unless it was to tell someone to simply get the hell out of his face. But he could find his voice when it was to speak to someone such as Echo. But it took him a moment to figure out what to even say. “I’ve been in the area for a while” he answered her, finally. “What are you doing here though? I thought you were dead. After you didn’t come back that one day…” his voice trailed off, an emotion akin to sorrow filling his eyes. Finally, his intense gaze dropped to the ground.

The large black wolf didn't move, didn't say a word. Echo was so excited that she didn't even care, she was just glad to have him near. She was so happy that he was alive. The female whined in her excitement, rubbing up against the brute that she had known since the moment he was born. She was there to watch him grow, and when she got attacked she feared for Nirco too. Then she remembered her scar, and hid her face from him. She was scarred, maimed, marked for life. Her whine became sincere, backing up slowly from the brute. Surely he knew what happened, he must have. Her eyes shifted back up to him, meeting his piercing blue eyes.
A small smile pressed on her lips, laughing softly. "I'm s-s-s-so g-g-g-glad to s-s-see y-y-you ali-ve Nir-nir-nirco. I th-thoug-thought y-y-you had b-b-b-been k-k-ki-killed," Her rusted tail wagged slowly as he kept the scarred side of her face away from him. She was careful not to show it, then realized that he probably had no clue. How would he find out? Their Alpha had been so quiet about everything. Her ears pinned back as her maw opened again. "He k-k-killed th-them. All o-of m-m-my p-p-pu-pups. R-right in fr-front of my ey-eyes," A single tear rolled down her face as she turned her face, her scar flashing in the light. "Th-they b-b-b-bea-beat m-m-me, g-g-gave m-me th-th-this scar. I c-can't he-here in m-my l-lef-left ear," Her stuttering got less strong as her anger and sadness rose, her ears flat on her head. Another whine broke out from her maw, her head hanging low as she remembered that day. Right in front of her eyes... right there.
Finally he spoke, telling her that he had been here for quite a long time. She nodded, her eyes glazing with concern. There was no way to just leave their old pack, he would have chased Nirco down and struck him where he was. When he turned her question around at her, she smiled faintly. "I c-craw-crawled ov-over he-here af-after I g-g-g-got bea-beat. Th-then I g-g-got cl-cl-claimed as a s-s-s-slave," She shook her head sadly, she never got away from being a Slakvin. At least her Alpha now did not beat her and she treated her well. Apparently the best one there is in these parts. At his sad look she stepped forward, licking his cheek and meeting his eyes. "I wi-wished th-they had k-k-killed me on-once it h-ha-happened. Th-they be-beat me s-so mu-much and ru-ruined my he-hear-hearing. I g-g-g-got th-this st-st-stutt-stutter t-too, Her voice was sad, and she saw him drop his head in his own sorrow. She lifted his dipped head with her own, looking in his intense gaze.
"H-ho-how is th-the p-p-pa-pack? Y-you could-couldn't ha-have j-ju-just wal-walked out-t," she barked, giving Nirco some space once more. She couldn't believe her eyes still, now that he was before her. How could this be so?

He’d noticed the way she tucked her head immediately. The way she appeared to be hiding something from him at first. Yes, he noticed that scar on the side of her face before she’d even had a chance to hide it from him. Of course he wondered where it had come from, the curiosity ever growing. Yet, he said nothing of it. He didn’t stare at it or comment on it. Doing such would have been rude, and she obviously didn’t want him to.
With a whine, she told him her sad tale. Of how their deceptive leader had killed her pups, the very thing any mother would live for. How they’d beaten and bruised her viciously, causing partial deafness and giving her the scar he’d noticed just a minute before. Nirco didn’t say anything in reply to that, though. He simply mulled over it in his head, eyes staring at the ground between them as he thought it all over. Of course her pups were dead. Their old leader wasn’t the type to let many live, especially when he didn’t approve of their birth first. He’d killed them and left Echo to die a slow, painful death. Anger rose within him, filling every fiber of his being. He subdued it skillfully though, no sign of such a horrible emotion coming out. How could he! he thought, disgusted by what he’d just learned. They’d been babies. Just babies! The bastard truly had had no heart. Nirco already knew that little fact, but it struck him like some newfound revelation.
Something she said brought him out of his silent seething then. Slave. The very word made the male nauseous, his stomach churning yet his face staying blank. Until, finally, he frowned. Before he could ask her whom her new master was, and tell her not to think in such a way, she asked him a question.
"H-ho-how is th-the p-p-pa-pack? Y-you could-couldn't ha-have j-ju-just wal-walked out-t,"
As she backed up, he flattened his ears back and gazed off to the right as if he didn’t want to look at her. It wasn’t entirely that he didn’t want to, though. It’s just that every time he did he knew he’d feel some inkling to try and set her free. He hated slavery. Loathed it with every fiber of his being. He didn’t know what he could do for Echo, though. Not right now anyways. “I ran away” he finally broke the silence. “He killed my father. I saw it happen. And so I ran. He was always faster, but I had a head start and more stamina. By the time he realized I was gone it must have been to late” he informed her, glancing at her for a moment as he raised his head, proud he’d gotten away. He also figured the fact that he’d never been a slave lessened his old leader’s desire to find him. Escaped slaves were a bigger priority than the escaped son of a murdered beta.
His once hardened gaze finally returned to her and noticeably softened. Forcing himself to sound calm and more collected than he felt, he finally asked her what he’d been wondering. “Who is your new master? Do they treat you well?”.

He was quiet for so long that Echo began to question whether he believed her or not. Did he think that she was just making it up? But how would she have gotten the scar, stutter and partial deafness. Well, she could have made up the latter two, although why she would was a question she did not wish to ponder. As these thoughts tumbled though her mind, her eyes scanned the brute for any sign of... well anything. He was so blank, so guarded. What happened to him? He use to be such a fun little wolf, a smile always on his face. He wasn't even looking at her now. She thought that she had known everything about Nirco, but after she vanished... Well, much could have happened in that span of time.
Then, at last! His face shifted. He didn't look up, but a frown tugged his lips down. Echo thought back to what she just said, about her being claimed, or the whole crawling to these lands? Tilting her head she knew that it had to be the first. Did he not agree with having slaves? She couldn't say that she was very excited about this position, but she had nothing else to do. With her deaf ear and stutter, there was no way that she could uphold a position of power. She would always carry this rank on her shoulders, there was nothing else she could do. Well she could be a free roamer, but it was so hard for her to hunt alone. Nothing big could be caught and all the little things were so quick. Echo was a fast runner, but her deaf ear threw her off. She still wasn't quite use to hunting with it.
At the sight of movement, the female shut off her thoughts. He pinned his ears and looked away, not meeting her ever present gaze. Did he not want to see her? After all this time was she just a bother, a reminder of a past he wanted to forget? Echo's own ears flashed back, her eyes widening a bit in fear. Could he truly not want to see her? He spoke then, stilling her fears for the moment. He went on to say that he had ran away, and she nodded her head solemnly. She knew that he couldn't have just gotten out, their old Alpha would have never allowed that. He wasn't very keen on losing pack members. If they wanted out, the only way to get there was through death's gates. Then his words rang in her head; he had killed her father. It didn't really surprise her, but it was still a shock to hear it. "I'm s-s-so s-s-so-sorry," she said, her eyes glazed with sorrow. They had lost so much already... His head lifted with pride though, and her tail gave a few wags of congratulations.
“Who is your new master? Do they treat you well?”
Echo nodded her head slowly, thinking of Hayashi. "Y-y-yes. Sh-she is-s a rath-rather st-st-strange o-o-one. Ver-r-very k-k-kind t-to all of h-her s-s-s-slave," She didn't bother trying to say her name, it was so much of a struggle for her to pronounce. It killed her that she had such a hard time with her words, she wished that it was just simple to talk again. She missed that... such a simple thing but she really did miss it. It made her not want to talk as much, she was embarrassed by it. "Do y-y-you ro-roam th-th-these lands f-f-freely?"

"I'm s-s-so s-s-so-sorry,"
Nirco shrugged, obviously not wanting to go further into that subject. It was painful enough to watch, and he’d spent a good majority of the last year or so being tortured by his memories of it. Not to mention he wasn’t exactly one to delve deep into his feelings or discuss it with someone. Not even if that someone was one he’d known for years. He simply wasn’t as open about his thoughts and feelings as he had been as a younger wolf, before all the disasters of life had taken place. And therefore, he said nothing more about his father.
"Y-y-yes. Sh-she is-s a rath-rather st-st-strange o-o-one. Ver-r-very k-k-kind t-to all of h-her s-s-s-slave," "Do y-y-you ro-roam th-th-these lands f-f-freely?"
Oddly enough, the fact that Echo claimed her master was a kind one did little change his outlook on the fact she was a slave. A slave was a slave. They might as well of been prisoner to their leaders and to the lands they were dragged off to. But freedom was different. A free wolf could wander the lands without being chained back by a possessive Dominor. Nirco himself know how difficult it was for someone to escape. Even he himself had had a hell of a scare when running from his old pack, and he hadn’t even been a slave. There had always been the worry that he’d be found and dragged back, decreased to the rank of the very wolf that stood before him. Hell, there still was that fear. But he always fought it off, choosing to instead take whatever came his way head on. There would be no more running for him, by choice. Freedom was something he’d keep till the day he died. “Yes I do, and I will always be free” he sounded confident, no doubt in his voice. If only Echo was not stuck in the position she was in, maybe she’d feel the same freedom some day.
A thought suddenly occurred to him, then, and he wondered why it hadn’t struck him sooner. Echo was not in pack lands. This realization caused him to become a little confused, considering she’d just told him she was a slave. He couldn’t help but stare at her for a long moment, trying to come up with an answer by himself. He couldn’t. Surely even a lenient Dominor wouldn’t let her subject run off so freely? “Echo. How are you here?” he asked. Perhaps it sounded like a bit of a ridiculous question. ‘I walked’ most wolves would probably answer. So he decided to elaborate a little more. “I mean, you said you were a slave, right? How is it that you haven’t been caught and taken back?” he lilted his head to the side a bit, finally letting some kind of emotion through. He was curious.

She knew that by the shrug of his shoulders that he did not wisht to speak of it any more. A sad smile was plastered on her face as she nodded her head. Echo could understand, the thoughts of her past were always with her. "I unders-st-stand Ni-ni-nirco. M-my p-p-p-pas-past hau-haunts m-me t-t-t-t-o." she whispered, shuffling her paws slightly. She didn't know what to say to him, he was being so closed off to her. She wasn't use to this, she was use to the days when he was a talkative one. A heavy sigh parted her lips, her pale blue eyes searching his stunning ones. There had to be something in there... he was not a sheet of ice. She would work through this ruse he was playing, even if she had to tear down his walls brick by brick. She would get through to him, or die trying. He was all she had left in this world...
His voice was so full of pride when he spoke of being free, causing the red femme's tail to wag. She was proud of him, that he knew he would never be claimed. She wished that she had the same option, but she did not run away from her last Master. She was forced into this life, beat into submission. It would take a lot of work for her to built her back bone up after that beating, and those memories. She shuddered just thinking of them, and had to forcefully shake them away. Echo would not drift away with Nirco standing right before her. She had to focus. "Y-y-you're l-luck-lucky," she spat out, her fur lighting on fire every time she spoke. She really hated this damn stutter, it embarrassed her to no end! She searched for signs of it bothering the black male, but saw none. In fact she saw nothing on that beautiful face of hers. It frustrated her to no end, and she was tempted to growl at him for hiding himself. Her mind flashed back to the words that Beck had told her on her first day in the pack, and repeated them to Nirco. "D-d-don't h-hide y-y-y-ours-s-elf. N-not f-f-f-for any-anyone."
When Nirco began to study her, she found herself glancing around at her own coat like something was out of place. She squinted her eyes at him in confusion, trying to figure out what the hell he was looking at. Her maw popped open to pose such a question when he beat her to it. At his words her ears pinned and she shuffled her paws. "Ahh...," she started, looking rather bashful as she glanced at her paws. "I w-walked out. I di-didn't th-thi-nk th-that she w-wou-ld m-m-mind," Echo looked up, a sheepish grin on her face. She knew that she shouldn't have just left, but she felt herself being pulled here. Maybe this was a sign, for the two of them to meet up.
